How Scoop Sage makes products comparable.
Scoop Sage structures product facts, normalizes them into common units, and calculates metrics that answer practical shopping questions.
1. Keep product variants distinct
Flavor, package size, serving count, formulation, seller, and price can all change the comparison. We aim to keep materially different variants separate instead of blending them into a misleading average.
2. Structure and review source facts
Product identity, package facts, nutrition-label values, retailer offers, and observation times are stored as separate facts. Automated extraction can help organize the catalog, but uncertain or conflicting values may be withheld until they can be reviewed.
A dash in a comparison means we do not have a usable value. It does not mean zero.
3. Normalize protein-powder comparisons
Package price alone rewards smaller containers, and price per serving can be distorted by different serving sizes. These metrics provide consistent views of value and nutrition:
Cost per gram of protein
price ÷ (servings × protein grams per serving)
Price per 25 grams of protein
cost per gram of protein × 25
Protein per 100 calories
(protein grams per serving ÷ calories per serving) × 100
This result is grams of protein per 100 calories, not a percentage of calories from protein.
Cost per serving
price ÷ servings
Calculated values inherit the limitations of their inputs. When a required value is missing, we leave the metric blank rather than estimate it.
4. Let the shopper choose what matters
Filters and sortable columns expose the underlying facts instead of declaring one universal “best” product. Default ordering follows the category's documented comparison logic and is never purchased by a manufacturer or merchant.
Known limitations
- Manufacturers can change formulas, labels, and packages without notice.
- Retail price and availability can change after an observation.
- Automated extraction and manual review can still contain errors.
- Seller listings may combine variants or contain incorrect details.
